St Barnabas Trust KS1 Multi-Sports Festival
It’s time to run, jump, throw, and play! Our Key Stage 1 Multi-Sports Festival is a high-energy event designed to give our younger students a taste of various sporting disciplines in one action-packed day. This festival is the perfect platform for children to discover new talents while developing the fundamentals of movement: Agility, Balance, and Coordination.
The Festival Format: A Journey of Discovery
For Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2), the day is structured as a Skills Carousel. There are no scoreboards or winners; instead, the goal is for every child to “have a go” and try something new.
The Activity Stations
Children will move through a series of stations, each led by friendly sports leaders. These zones focus on the “FUNdamentals” of physical literacy:
- The Agility Zone: Navigating fun obstacle courses and ladder runs.
- The Target Zone: Improving accuracy by throwing beanbags or balls at fun targets.
- The Balance Zone: Testing stability with beams and coordination games.
- The Teamwork Zone: Playing collaborative games where the only goal is to work together with friends from different schools.
A Social Experience
This festival is a wonderful way for our students to meet children from other schools in the Trust. Because there is no pressure of competition, they can focus on:
- Making New Friends: Playing alongside peers in a relaxed setting.
- Building Confidence: Trying activities they might have been nervous to attempt before.
- Following Instructions: Learning to move between stations and listen to the sports leaders.
At the Key Stage 1 level, we believe the most important thing is for children to develop a lifelong love for being active. By removing the pressure of “winning or losing,” we ensure that every child—regardless of their current athletic ability—leaves the sports hall feeling like a champion.
Why Multi Sports?
A Multi-Sports approach ensures that every child finds something they enjoy, whether they are a fast runner, a steady thrower, or a great team motivator. These events build foundational physical literacy that will benefit them in every sport they choose to play as they move into Key Stage 2.
