St Nicolas Primary School Pupils on sports tournament

St Barnabas Trust Pickleball Championships

The Trust Pickleball Competition is designed to develop sharp racket skills, quick reflexes, and tactical thinking. This event brings our school communities together for a day of high-energy, friendly competition on the courts.

The Regional Hubs

The championships will be held across our two primary locations:

  • East Cornwall Hub: Hosted at a central Liskeard/Saltash venue.
  • Mid Cornwall Hub: Hosted at a central Bodmin venue.

Our Trust Vision: “Bring It!”

We want our players to step onto the court ready to “Bring It” in every rally:

  • Bring your Energy: For those quick lateral movements and lightning-fast “kitchen” volleys.
  • Bring your Courage: To take on powerful drives and stay calm during high-speed exchanges at the net.
  • Bring your Best: Focusing on the “Soft Game”—mastering the dink, the serve, and the strategic placement of the ball.

Competition Format: “The Big Paddle”

The event is split into two phases to ensure all students transition from skill-building to match play effectively.

Phase 1: Racket Skill Rotations

Before the tournament begins, students will rotate through specialised “Pro-Clips” stations:

  • The Serve & Return: Master the underhand serve and the deep return to start the point strong.
  • Dinking Drills: Practising soft, controlled shots into the “Kitchen” (the non-volley zone).
  • Volley Battles: Sharpening hand-eye coordination for those close-range net rallies.

Phase 2: The Tournament

Once the warm-ups are complete, the competitive fixtures begin:

  • Pool Stages: Schools will compete in a “Round Robin” format, playing short, timed matches against various opponents.
  • The Finals: Top-seeded pairs or teams will progress to a knockout stage to crown the Hub Champions.
  • Professional Standards: We will aim to play with official Pickleball rules, including the “Double Bounce Rule” and “Non-Volley Zone” restrictions.

Sportsmanship and Integrity

In Pickleball, the “spirit of the court” is just as important as the score.

  • The Kitchen Code: Respecting the rules of the non-volley zone is a test of honesty and integrity.
  • The Paddle Tap: In the tradition of the sport, every match concludes with players tapping the bottom of their paddles together at the net as a sign of respect.
  • Positive Coaching: Students are encouraged to coach and support their teammates from the sidelines with positivity and enthusiasm.

Awards & Recognition

While we celebrate our winners, we also place a high value on growth. All children will receive a certificate and medal to recognise their achievements.
