St Barnabas Trust Grass Track Cycling Championships
Hosted at St Martin’s Primary School and St Petroc’s Primary School, this series brings the excitement of the velodrome to the grass oval. From our youngest balance-bikers to our Year 6 sprinters, every student will have the chance to “Bring It!”
Our Trust Vision: “Bring It!”
- Bring your Energy: For the big pushes out of the corners.
- Bring your Courage: For those shoulder-to-shoulder moments on the track.
- Bring your Best: For the tactical focus needed to master different race formats.
The Event Tiers
To ensure everyone competes at the right level, the series is divided into three distinct categories:
EYFS & Key Stage 1
Short Sprints, “Follow the Leader” laps and basic Scratch races.
Year 3 & 4
Scratch Races and Introduction to Elimination.
Year 5 & 6
Scratch, Elimination and tactical Points races.
The Race Formats
As the students progress through the year groups, the complexity of the races increases. Here is a few examples of the type of races the children will take part in:
- The Scratch Race (All Ages): The classic sprint. A set number of laps where the first wheel across the finish line wins.
- The Elimination Race: Known as “The Devil Take the Hindmost.” Every few laps, the last rider to cross the finish line is eliminated until only the final few remain for a head-to-head sprint.
- The Points Race: A test of endurance and timing. Riders score points for “sprint laps” during the race. The winner is the rider with the most points, not necessarily the one who finishes the final lap first!
Sportsmanship & Safety
Regardless of age, Integrity is our lead rider.
- Handshakes at the Finish: Every race ends with a show of respect for the effort of fellow competitors.
- The “Umpire’s” Call: The Track Official’s word is final, teaching students to respect the rules of the sport.
- Safety First: All participants must wear a correctly fitted helmet and have their bikes checked by a teacher or lead coach before entering the track.
Note for EYFS/KS1 Parents: For our youngest competitors, the focus is entirely on participation and the joy of being on two wheels. Every rider in this tier will receive a certificate and sticker for taking part.
