St Barnabas Trust KS2 Tag Rugby Competition
Get ready for pace, precision, and plenty of tries! Tag Rugby is a fantastic, non-contact version of the game that emphasizes speed, tactical thinking, and selfless teamwork. This event is designed to challenge our Year 3 through to Year 6 children, moving beyond basic drills into a fast-paced, competitive tournament environment.
The Tournament Format: Skill & Competition
As a Key Stage 2 event, we balance high-level skill development with a structured competitive format. The day is designed to push players to apply their training in real-match scenarios.
Tactical Warm-ups
Before the tournament begins, teams will participate in focused warm up sessions to sharpen their match readiness:
- The “Line” Defense: Practicing moving as a unit to close down space.
- Quick Hands: High-speed passing drills to improve transition play.
- Support Lines: Learning where to run once a teammate has made a break.
The Championships
Once the whistles blow, the competitive tournament begins! We introduce several elements to elevate the stakes:
- Pool Stages & Finals: Schools will compete in a league format, leading to knockout rounds or placing matches.
- Referees: Games will be officiated to high standards, helping students learn the rules and the importance of respecting the official’s decision.
- The Leaderboard: Scores and tries will be recorded, with medals and certificate presentation for the winning teams and those demonstrating the best “Spirit of the Game.”
Sportsmanship and Respect
While the competition is included, the core values of Rugby – Respect, Discipline, and Fair Play – remain at the heart of the event. We expect all players to shake hands at the end of every match and celebrate the success of their peers across the Trust. Tag Rugby is about finding the gaps, making the tags, and working together.
