Safeguarding at St Martin’s School

At St Barnabas Trust, our collective priority is to ensure the safety of our children. We achieve this by maintaining a secure environment for learning and play, identifying children at risk of harm, and taking decisive action to protect them at school and at home.

To support this commitment, we have established systems designed to:

Prevent unsuitable individuals from working with children
Promote safe practices while challenging poor or unsafe behaviour
Identify welfare concerns and initiate appropriate action to ensure child safety
Collaborate effectively with all agencies involved in providing services for children and young people

Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is Tor Bandara.
Our Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leada are Tracey Enever, Rebecca McHale, Rhonda Nile and Jill Wynne.
Our Governor with safeguarding responsibility is Janine Hards.

Policy and Procedures

We will ensure all policies and procedures in respect of safeguarding children are up to date and in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education 2025 . The policies are accessible to all staff through our Smartlog system. Policies and procedures are reviewed and revised by the Safeguarding Lead on a regular basis and ratified by the Board of Directors.

Disclosure & Barring Checks

St Barnabas Trust meets statutory requirements in relation to Disclosure & Barring Service – all staff and volunteers who work with us who meet the ‘regulated activity test’ (Freedoms Act 2012) is required to undergo an enhanced DBS check prior to employment.

Training

All eligible staff and volunteers are required to undertake relevant safeguarding training. At St Barnabas Trust this training comprises:

A mandated online training course for all staff each year

Inset training at the beginning of each academic year coordinated by the Trust Safeguarding Lead

Regular safeguarding updates at the start of each term delivered by the school DSL

Mandatory DSL training updated every 2 years

Audit

All St Barnabas Trust schools complete the section 157 annually and submit to the Local Authority. The audit provides schools with a comprehensive self-review of their safeguarding policies and practices as well as a safeguarding action plan detailing strengths and areas for development.
